Podcast Opening over Theme Music:
Hello and welcome. This is Kate's Nuggets, the podcast where I share bite-size nuggets of wisdom about self-leadership. I am your host, Kate Arms. I invite you to listen lightly, let these ideas wash over you. Take what you take and let the rest go. You can always come back and listen again.
Kate Arms:
What on earth is self-leadership and why is it important for intense people?
Self-leadership is important for everybody, but it is more important for intense people. Self-leadership is taking control of how all of the various parts of yourself come together. And using your core self, your best self, your inner leader as the decision maker for how you interact with the world, and how you incorporate all of the intense pieces of yourself.
The first thing to do is to start cultivating the idea, the mindset, that you do not have to be controlled by your intensities. You do not have to be reactive. You can choose to lead your life as an intense person, using your intensity, not being thrown around by it.
This is going to be a shift for lots of people. And how you make a shift is practice.
The way you practice with this kind of mindset shift is this. When something comes up and you notice, "oh, here's my intense reaction to this," pause and ask, "what do I want to have happen now that this reaction has occurred?"
"What am I going to choose to do with this?"
It really helps to have a sense of who you are when you're calm and compassionate and caring and concerned and creative, and tap into that part of yourself and say, "okay, here, this reaction is flowing through me. What response is going to help me make progress towards one of my goals?"
If you pause in the moment and ask that question, see what happens.
Typically, it opens up new possibilities and increases your sense of control. And when you increase that sense of control, you increase your sense that I can make the things I want to have happen, happen. And then you're more motivated to do the things to make it happen.
So practicing as often as you can, as often as you notice, oh, I'm being reactive. What do I want to create from this moment given that this reaction is happening?
Over time, that will become a habitual response and then it will be your mindset, and then all sorts of other things become possible.
So what are you going to create from this?
Have a great day.
